Coal Production – Conceptual Loading

The client is developing the Crown Mountain Hard Coking Coal Project in Elk Valley, British Columbia, targeting clean coal production. The project’s strategic advantage lies in its proximity to existing transport infrastructure, crucial for efficient coal delivery to West Coast ports. To bolster this logistic framework, The Client engaged Tri Innovations to identify optimal sites for rail loading facilities, a key component in streamlining coal transportation. Tri Innovations conducted a two-phased assessment, initially reviewing three potential sites based on a variety of criteria including terrain, land use, and environmental considerations. Following this analysis, we developed conceptual track layout designs for the recommended locations, ensuring the proposed rail infrastructure would meet the project’s logistic needs and operational efficiency.

Detailed Scope

  • Site Assessment and Recommendations: Performed an initial review of three potential sites, evaluating factors such as terrain, land use, accessibility, environmental impact, and infrastructure needs, to recommend optimal locations for rail loading facilities.
  • Conceptual Design Development: Based on the recommendations from Phase 1, developed conceptual track layout designs for the selected site(s), ensuring alignment with project logistics and operational efficiency.
  • Terrain and Data Challenges: Navigated the complexities of the project’s terrain and limited data availability by leveraging LIDAR information and making informed assumptions pending a detailed site visit.
  • Rail Infrastructure Planning: Estimated the construction of rail infrastructure r depending on the final site selection, to accommodate the project’s rail loading and offloading needs.
